A

For many years I worked in the film industry working very long hours when I have a contract then experiencing unemployment in between contracts.  After finishing a long contract, I decided I needed a break and headed over to Vancouver Island.  I rented a cabin on the water for a month in Nanoose Bay.  I felt so inspired living on the water in Nanoose Bay that I wrote this poem;

The deer are out grazing from day to day

Sea Lions barking in the very next bay

A huge Wood pecker with a very red head

Little black Lizard pretending to play dead

Waves are lapping the shore all day long

Loons calling with such haunting song

Heron wading in the low tide

Sea otter scurries into the water to hide

Sea birds diving, where will they appear?

Ducks bobbing, Frogs croaking, it’s all so near

I feel so lucky, paradise found

No wonder I’ve decided to be Island bound

Farewell to the mainland, time for a new start

I have no choice, the Island has my heart!

I have never written a poem before but inspiration came pouring out of me.  I felt more alive than I had in years.  I also discovered that renting a property on the water in the winter was less expensive than living on the mainland so I decided to look for a place to rent for the winter expecting to work during the week on the mainland and spend weekends on the Island.  Once I found a wonderful house in Qualicum Beach, I went back to the mainland, sold most of my stuff, put the rest in storage and moved to Qualicum Beach.  I brought my paints and planned to get back into painting but I saw such amazing sealife and spent a lot of my time outside snapping photos.  Some of these photos turned out really well and it inspired me to take more.  At Christmas time, I gave my friends framed print gifts and they loved them, they encouraged me to pursue photography.  I started making photo greeting cards to share my photography with others.  My cards sell for $4 each or 3 for $10.
